How Ogamic is being built

I started in June 2026 and work on it alone. Dates below come from the commit history of the app. The repository is private for now, so this page is the public trace.

June 2026

  1. First commit. A local-first outliner: daily pages, one graph of notes, a SQLite file in a folder on my own disk. Desktop app on Tauri.

  2. Claude comes in. The AI layer talks to the Anthropic API directly (any OpenAI-compatible endpoint works too), with the key kept on the user's machine.

  3. Full-text search. Supertags and fields on any note.

  4. Rebuilt the editor on CodeMirror 6. #tags and [[links]] are inline chips.

  5. Backlinks, a page per tag, renaming and merging tags across the whole journal.

  6. Open questions became a real thing: a question stays open until a later note answers it.

  7. Tasks are ordinary bullets with a checkbox, gathered in one view.

  8. AI requests run in the background, in a queue, so writing never waits for them.

July 2026

  1. Decided what the product is: an outliner that works as a second memory, not a notes app with a chat bolted on.

  2. Day reflection. Claude reads the day and its signals and writes a short reflection. Nothing enters the journal until I accept it.

  3. The reflection points out tensions: two of my own notes that disagree.

  4. Portrait: Claude's hypotheses about my recurring patterns, each one citing the notes it rests on. Agenda: the oldest forgotten open question comes back to the top of today.

  5. Context stack: I pick fragments from different days and work on them with Claude in a separate workbench.

  6. Attachments, and tasks shown where they belong in the journal.

August and September 2026

  1. Compact tag catalog with combined filters.

  2. “Signal”, the look you see on this site: glass, a field of marks, holographic dates.

October 2026

  1. Menus rebuilt from scratch, settings moved into their own window.

  2. Continuous journal: all days in one scroll, today at the bottom.

  3. The app got its name, Ogamic.

  4. Voice typing and IME input no longer double the text.

  5. Typing felt slow. Profiled it and cut the work done per keystroke about three times.

  6. ogamic.app went live.
